Day 172. Monday 17th February 2025. From Nautical Club camp, Tres Marias, to RPPN Linda Serra dos Topazios, 16k’s from Cristalina. Brazil. 229miles or 368 k’s.

A brilliant campsite last night. By the time we climbed into bed it was 29.8 degC and cooling slowly. The noise had abated from across the lake and there was no movement within the camp.

This morning dawned fine again and after using the immaculately presented facilities, we were on the road by 10am with only 545k’s to reach Brasilia. Will we do it in the day? History say’s no, which is confirmed when we pulled into another giant supermarket.

Traffic is light and we make good progress. Between 83 & 90kph, depending on conditions. 130kph in a flash when passing.

The countryside changed greatly during the day. From scrubby vegetation covered hills to huge areas of crops of all kinds. Forestry too. The logging trucks were piled with spindly sticks that can only be used for paper?

The closer we get to Brasilia there is intensive cropping. Harvesters are working flat out to clear the fields before the rain that is not far way, arrives. Heavy black cumulus clouds show that it’s raining further ahead of us.

Brake pads

The brake pads fitted on Saturday are sintered, meaning they are impregnated with metal to extend life. However they squeak like billy O! I’m going to have to squirt WD40 on them to quieten them down….joking..:) Maybe I’ll take them out and chamfer them in the hope of making some improvement. At least we have good brakes again!! And thankfully we still have a spare tyre. As Kelvin mentioned, with such low tread on the tyres, we are vulnerable to punctures. I suspect the repaired tyre that blew, had developed another puncture and was running flat till it got so hot that it burst. It must have been very close to ignition as it was smoking. If it had caught alight, we would have probably lost Poki!!!

Other than tyres, she is still going superbly, dare I proffer. Poki that is,…but Jen too…:)

Time zones

Without fanfare, our time pieces all agree again. Computer, phones, watches and sat-nav. As we track further west we must have crossed into another time zone, that nobody recognises, here at least..

Our camp for tonight.

With 138 k’s to go to Brasilia and 4pm, we decide to head for a camp listed on iOverlander that is 16k’s out from Cristalina. It’s soon our first taste of the red dirt roads in Brazil. I’m picking that once we head west from Brasilia, we will encounter many more? For 7k’s we drive along this badly water rutted, bumpy track and without wifi, find another gem camp in the bush. A stream running behind our camp site and nobody else around. That is until the manager turns up and demands 200R from us, for the pleasure. Considering we only paid 160R last night, this is steep. I guess they know the scarcity of alternatives..:) We make use of the kitchen facilities to cook and Jen prepares another great meal. A shower before bed too. Unfortunately it’s already getting dark at 6.45pm. 27.1degC in Poki. We are at 1120m. elevation.

Lovely showers and facilities right beside us. Green grass for the Caranex.

Who, me?…:)

Economy.

At the last fuel refill we recorded 29.66mpg. Total miles on clock 231746
