Day 132. Wednesday 8th January. From Municipal Camping Gobernador Costa to Camping Complejo Aven-Hue, El Hoyo, Argentina. 223 miles or 358 K’s.

There’s something about the number of miles we have done in the last four days. Two days with exactly the same number of miles and they all add to 1000 miles. No wonder we are both tired.

I had to pull off the road this afternoon for a 15min snooze to drive the remaining 50k’s. Boy, what a difference.

Last nights camp was pretty basic. Totally adequate but unloved. Not like the municipal camping in Perito Moreno, which reflected pride.

Instead of making lunch in Poki today, we decided Jen needed a coffee, so stopped for lunch at a YPF service station cafe. Two small wraps, a cup of froth for coffee and a hot chocolate….£20!! Jeez!!

The countryside has slowly changed from wide pampas, to rolling hills with mountains again in the distance. Starting to appear, forestry.

We are heading for and beyond, Bariloche. That was our original destination this morning but tiredness caused a rethink. It’s a further 100+ k’s. We’ll find a nice camp beyond and take a day off to relax, do some washing and give Poki a spruce up for the drive eastwards towards the big cities.

Helping hand.

I was just saying to Jen, while driving along, “there’s not too much to report in today’s blog entry”when we drove past a car in the gravel with a flat tyre. I thought I saw a woman with young boy trying to get a jack under the car. Reversing back they were struggling with finding a place to position the jack under a rear axle and had only part of the jack mechanism to wind it up. The car was a small Peugeot. The young fellow, about age 7, was amazing, helping his Mum, but they would never have got the wheel off. He came out of the boot with a long reach socket that gave the extra leverage the jack handle to wind the jack up. The wheel was also welded on to the drum with corrosion and needed a hammer to break it free. In 20min they were on their way again. They both had a great attitude and were not going to give up!

Entering the outskirts of El Hoyo iOverlander took us to a camping site, however Jen walked the camp and came back unimpressed. No flat site and the only camping area a long way from facilities. The host was sure we wouldn’t get a better price at 20,000pesos. We declined his offer and drove back up the road and are now established in a flattish, tree’d site at 16,000pesos.

New Zealand seems to be having a cold, wet spell for summer holidays and the UK suffering sub zero temperatures. Temperatures here a rising slowly as we trend northwards. With it, shorter daylight hours.

Here’s another one for you Charley….what is it? Shsssh, Ash!…:)
