Day 98. Wednesday, 4th December, 2024. At the Municipal Campsite in Puerto Santa Cruz.

We didn’t rush to get up, as today is a non-driving day. Our number one task is to get the laundry done. My wardrobe is exhausted. Dennis has more clothes than me, although he will deny it, but our bedding, towels etc are all in need of washing. We can’t guarantee getting things dry now, as it is much cooler and sometimes rainy, so hand washing isn’t possible. Something I’m not sorry about!

We decided to walk to the launderette. Google maps said it was a 20 minute walk, so each with a large black plastic bag of washing slung over our shoulders, we set off. Our washing filled 3 of the launderette’s baskets. At 8,000 pesos a basket, not cheap. (More than £18. I think it’s a tourist price.) That includes folding afterwards. It will be neatly handed back to us in plastic packs at 8pm this evening.

After dropping off the washing, we tried to find a coffee shop. Rare as hen’s teeth in these parts. We found a little shop selling cakes and pastries and bought a couple of custardy creations, eating them as we walked down the road. Very tasty they were too.

Photos during our wandering,

We finished up meandering all the way to the coast. Today the sea was a turquoise/blue colour as opposed to the dull grey of yesterday, in the rain. It is still windy, but the sun is shining and is quite warm in sheltered spots.

Passing a supermarket, we were tempted by a bottle of Argentinian Malbec, for the princely sum of 3,200 pesos, about £3 or NZ$6. We have become quite partial to South American reds.

Visiting the Tourist Office, once again, we asked if there was a coffee shop anywhere in town. A very sweet lady, who did her best to speak English, pointed to a restaurant on the sea front where we might get coffee, or advised there was a cafe at the other end of town.

We tried the restaurant. It was lovely and warm, inviting and quite busy. The friendly waitress said they did do coffee and hot chocolate. As it was lunch time by now, we decided we would have a pizza too.

Cruise communication

I have been corresponding with Ana at Wayfinder Adventures in Ushuaia. Wayfinder Adventures specialise in last minute Antarctic Cruise bookings and we can also leave Poki in their secure parking while we are on the cruise. Today, Ana, who has made our reservation, informs me it is very windy and snowing in Ushuaia. Reason enough not to get there too early.

This afternoon Dennis was industrious and cleaned Poki and greased the drive shaft. I was lazy and did very little until it was time to cook dinner. Just fried eggs on toast and some fruit and yogurt. We weren’t really hungry after our cakes and pizza earlier.

We then had to go out again and collect the laundry. I argued about the price. It wasn’t the owner who gave us the bill this morning, but a lady. She wasn’t budging though. Obviously, she didn’t have the authority to give us a reduction. We had 2 big packages to carry back. They felt heavier than this morning, but the exercise did us good.

Tomorrow we think we will go to a National Park not too far south, about 70 kms. It is meant to be home to pumas. I doubt we will see any though? There is no wifi so we will be out of communication for the next couple of days.
