Day 47. Monday 14th October. Nasca Lodge, Nasca to Hotel Los Andes, Puquio. Peru.

Last night Jen said, “will we fly the Lines tomorrow”? Mmmm…”what about the cost”? No response, she just did it. To hell with the expense…:) Love the attitude.

Despite the quiet location, once all the local punters went home around 7pm, it wasn’t a great nights sleep. Jen has been struggling with a niggly infection and was restless. She’s on the mend.

We are flying!!

It was a leisurely morning as our pick up for the airport was not due till 11am. Meawhile we got chatting with the owner of the site. Jen mentioned that we had booked a flight and he suggested we drive to the airport as there are two Nasca Lodges!!! It’s a rat hole airport, but still they wanted parking fees and airport tax, and tourism board fee, then after weighing us, forgot about us. By 1.10pm we boarded the Cessna. All in all it was a waste of time. The sun being overhead, it was very difficult to make out the AMAZING graphics on the ground and even more difficult to photograph them. On top of that I was starting to feel nauseous.

The scale of these graphics is stupendous. I’ve turned a couple of pics into B&W as you can see the lines easier

Two contrasting moods in the photo below. One says it all…:) Jen’s enjoying herself, at least…:)

Not a place I would like to be near in the wet season!!

By the time we drove away from the airport it was 2pm. Our destination Cuzco, almost on the other side of the Andes, 655k’s away. We set a target for Puquio 155 k’s away. As it was, we didn’t arrive till 6pm, exhausted. The road was excellent, but tight bends, trucks, altitude. I believe we peaked at over 4000m. Puquio though is at 3250m.

They are hardy, nuggety, people inhabiting the mountains, tending and herding sheep and cattle. A brutal life they lead. We pass several flocks and herds en route.

At a mountain settlement we came across an amazing scene. Amidst brown hills and habitations, a soccer field, as green as green could be, and a game of soccer going on. I think each team had about 18 players of all ages and sexes. Community spirit.

Hotel Los Andes

It’s very basic, but clean and perfectly adequate, and 3/4 of the price to camp last night. We have hot water too. We have safe, covered parking for Poki, and dinner inside her, is over. It’s now 9.30pm. We are pooped, and ready for bed.

Will we make Cuzco tomorrow? I doubt it. Let’s see.

A parting comment. The yacht racing is fascinating. Nuf sed. ..:)

  1. Those B&W conversions of the Nazca lines worked well – amazing scenes.

  2. Thanks Neal. The issue was, apart from G-Force and other things, the sun being directly above, bleaching the ground, reducing contrast.
