Day 31. Saturday 28th. Coda Vista Camp ground. Quito. Ecuador.

It was great to be in our own bed in Poki last night. It was cold and wet outside, and inside the Caranex too! 14degC when we went to bed.

By morning the clouds had parted and there was some weak sunshine, enough to dry the Caranex.

Not a lot to report today. Anita and Peter from Switzerland arrived before we were out of bed. They had spent much of a week in the Amazon doing some trekking and looking for Pink Dolphins and had traveled back overnight by bus. They reported a distinct lack of water in the rivers.

Objectives for the day.

Pick up Jen’s broken Nikon camera. At the same time do some shopping to restock the larder.

Have two big bags of laundry washed and dried. Andy, the kind camp host arranged for a cab for us and called a laundry nearby to arrange the refurbishment.

We dropped the laundry off at around 11am with the promise it would be ready by 6pm. The cab then took us to the camera shop and next door supermarket and waited 20min for us. Returning us to the camp nearly an hour later. The traffic was horrendous. The fee $12.90!!! He was delighted with $15, as were we.

At the camera shop I bought a UV filter and retractable rubber lens hood for the Canon. $24 for both. They would have been $150 in NZ, or the equivalent in the UK.

The other objective was a haircut. I can almost plait what’s left..:) It’ll have to be another day.

Come 5.45pm Andy took Jen down to pick up the laundry. Returned, beautifully clean, socks matched and all neatly folded. $10!!!

Sport.

While we managed to beat Aussie in the Rugby, our cricketers are getting a toweling at the hands of Sri Lanka. I note the Aussies also got a thrashing from the Poms in a 50 over game. The Bok’s trounced the Argies to take the what-ever-it-is trophy for the rugby season. Richly deserved.

The weather forcast here say’s rain for the next four days. We’re outa here tomorrow, hopefully for warmer and drier, but not too hot, climes.

In the absence of any pictorial enhancement today, a photo from the panga that intrigued me. A perfect volcanic cone sticking out of an oily sea, in the Galapagos.

  1. O for the joy of a hard top 20ft caravan in the rain! Mind you, wouldn’t want to tow it where you guys have been. Well done for taking the time and making the effort to visit the Galapagos Islands. Time to head south, and hopefully out of the rain. Keep it coming.

    • I was just thinking, after we chatted, it’s the first day I can remember, in the whole journey, we have spent so much time being couped up in Poki. There have been some periods, but not for much of the day. Yes, and we were envious of Anita and Peter in their beautiful singing, dancing campervan and you and Jen in your shiny caravan..:)
