Sunday, 18th August. Cartagena.

We’ve now been in Colombia for 3 weeks. Another week to go before Poki is due to arrive. I’m not sure how we’re going to entertain ourselves. I think we’ve visited all of the tourist sights here in Cartagena.

This morning the doorbell rang. It wasn’t early, but we were still in bed, there being nothing to rush to get up for. Dennis decided he would go and see who was ringing. I heard English being spoken and laughter. It turned out to be two Jehovah’s Witnesses. It doesn’t matter where you are in the world, they will still find you! At least Dennis could communicate, as only Spanish is very much the norm.

Nothing of interest during the day to report, I’m afraid. A visit to two supermarkets to restock. It is so hot out, you can’t just go for a walk. It’s too unpleasantly hot and humid.

Early evening we ventured out again. Still trying to find cayenne pepper for Dennis. Two more aborted attempts, but we did get a lead as to where we might locate some. While we were walking the air was full of screeching birds. Small parakeets. We have noticed every evening they seem to congregate, noisily, in a place where they must roost for the night.

Success, the new supermarket we were told about was more upmarket. We also managed to find black, English Breakfast tea, 15,000 Pesos (nearly £4) for 10 tea bags. Another staple that had been proving difficult. We also managed to buy some more walnuts.

I have been doing some research to see what else we can do while we are here. I have found a couple of museums, a botanical garden and numerous boat trips out to various offshore islands. Most of these are to beach clubs and party type venues. Interestingly many of them have an age restriction of 60!!!! These pre-bookable, on-line, organised excursions are quite expensive and include lunch or drinks. We may be better off going to the point the boats leave from and seeing if we can just get a boat to an island for the day?
